I grew up with a similar underlying message that somehow the world would lead you astray and wasn't to be trusted. My mother always saw God as love, but all the church rules instilled the fear that it was going to be very hard to stay within the lines and out of trouble. But as an adult I have ended up similar to how you described yourself in the second paragraph. I suppose the simplest description is now my spirituality is based on love rather than fear.
